Apple Runs Out of New iPads--Everywhere

AT&T 4G Marketing Confuses iPhone 4S Users - Mobile Now: "AT&T 4G Marketing Confuses iPhone 4S Users - Apple iPhone 4S users who received the new iOS 5.1 update to their phone got a little more than they bargained for. Once the upgrade completed, the network indicator on their phone switched mysteriously from 3G to 4G (see photo), leaving users wondering if the upgrade somehow gave their iPhone 4S new LTE chips in the process. As CNET reports, no actual 4G upgrade occurred—instead, the icon change is a bit of savvy marketing on AT&T’s part. . . . Carriers use the term 4G as a marketing feature, not as a technical definition,” said Carl Howe, research VP at Yankee Group. “The upgrade that Apple did was just aligning its phone platform with what the carriers were saying, namely that HSPA+ was 4G. This quibbling over marketing versus technical standards won’t stop there either—according to the International Telecommunications Union, a mobile radio standard must have a peak speed of more than 100 Mbps to qualify as 4G by its definition. Today’s LTE protocols top out at 92 Mbps, making even the latest smartphones and iPads not true 4G by ITU standards. But despite that technicality, when you use LTE, your smartphone will undoubtedly light up the 4G logo.”"
